Hiking in Fort Mountain

Sonali and I haven’t been to North Georgia in forever so we decided to brave the heat and head some place new. When we lived in Alpharetta, we frequented the Northeast side of our state a lot. Lately we’ve been trying to see what’s there on the Eastern parts.

Fort Mountain has a lot of trails, but most of them seem somewhat unused and infrequently traveled. We traveled on portions of the Guhati Trail, which is an 8.2 mile loop. The trail was well marked, but could have used a little more attention. There were lengthy sections that were nearly overgrown and more than a few trees blocking the path.

The trail also didn’t seem that popular, we didn’t see another soul while walking. We ended up taking the main road back instead of walking back down the trail to make up some time.

Cloudland Canyon

Two weeks ago, Sonali and I headed up to Cloudland Canyon State Park near the Tennessee and Alabama borders. I didn’t realize that any form like that existed in the state of Georgia. It’s not really near any of the other major attractions in North Georgia, but it’s very accessible from Chattanooga, TN. Being a bit off the beaten path keeps it from getting too crowded. It was lunchtime on a fantastic day and there were still ample picnic and parking spots.

It’s worth checking out if you like this sort of stuff. We took the 5.1 mile West Rim trails. There were some sections that were somewhat challenging, but the views were spectacular. Either this weekend or next will be the ideal times for fall color, so you might see us up there again.

If you prefer not to brave the great outdoors, you can live vicariously through our pictures.
